The Last Days On Earth
On August 30, ABC News aired a special edition of 20/20 entitled The Last Days on Earth. I tuned in for only the final fifteen minutes in which they were discussing the last three of seven ominous threats to the human race, including nuclear war, plagues, and global warming.
Amazingly, all of these threats and others are foretold in Scripture. There are days coming that will include famine, pestilence, natural disasters, wars, and a spiritual drought that the world has never seen before. These events will not be created by man alone, however. God Himself will be working behind the scenes to judge the world for sin.
One scientist on the program concluded with glee that we are living in the first generation of history that actually gets to decide the future of our planet. How wrong could he be? In fact, it is our prideful assumption that we are in control that will help to provoke God’s wrath and judgment toward our sins.
The conclusion of the scientists had everything to do with working to preserve the planet, but nothing to do with recognizing the God of the universe and repenting before Him. Aren’t you glad that believers in Christ can think beyond the “end of the world” as we know it to an age of total peace under the reign and rule of King Jesus? And aren’t you glad that He’s promised us a never-ending home in the heavens?
Are you prepared to meet eternity head-on? It is sure to meet you sooner than you might realize!

You state that “it is our prideful assumption that we are in control”- this is patently false as it pertains directly to scientific observation from all scientific disciplines. True science has a deep respect for what people want to believe, and the scientific community is under no illusion that we control ANYTHING other than to the extent that we are impacting our global environment, which is testable, measurable and scientific fact. Fact finding by faith is not possible. Using real science to substantiate and lend credence to belief systems is perfectly acceptable, but MUST past rigorous testing, analysis, and hypothesizing, and is always open to further inquiry. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Faith asserts that you already have a corner on the truth market. Game over for any other point of view, heh?
Robert, I’m not sure if I agree with your point of view or not, but I’m close to agreeing. I would assert that it’s acceptable to believe something before it endures scientific scrutiny, though our beliefs will certainly be tailored by what we discover via our analysis. Even science itself has been shaped by this very idea over the centuries.
Further, if you knew me, you would know your last statement doesn’t characterize my approach to other belief systems at all. I’m open to other points of view and am certainly open to dialog and discussion about other points of view. At the end of the day, however, there can only be one truth and after a decade and a half of struggling to understand the mysteries of the universe, I’ve decided that the God of the Bible is the one true God and that His truth is the only truth. To deny me this belief is to deny any many any amount of certainty about any idea.
Thanks for weighing in, Robert. I appreciate that you’ve challenged me and others to put our faith to the test and to have a faith that is reasonable.
One last thing – I definitely agree that our actions affect the environment around us. I think this is virtually undeniable. I would simply assert that in the end of all things, God is still the ultimate Weaver of our global destiny.
