ONE GREAT TRUTH: It is possible to live life without regrets, but only as we understand God’s unfolding plan of redemption in our lives.
Regrets have a way of crippling our Christian walk. Regrets cause us to come to a standstill in the Christian life. As I come to the end of the year 2008, my mind is reflecting on some of God’s great saints and how their lives ended. For many, their lives are described as full even though they made terrible mistakes in this life. Jacob, David, Solomon, Paul, the list goes on. They were heroes who had rough beginnings, but triumphant endings. How is it possible, in our humanness, to live life without regrets?
1. Embrace the Grace of Redemption.
This means understanding the extent of God’s forgiveness, letting go of the past, and learning from our mistakes without letting them discourage us.
2. Live Life Fully for God’s Purpose.
The fight, the course, the faith… all are phrases Paul uses to point out the necessity of living this moment for God’s purpose. Any moment filled with God’s purpose, and any moment in which we are living out the will of God is a moment with no regrets.
3. Focus Your Energy on the Future.
Paul’s words in Philippians 3:13-14 seem to echo his thoughts here – it’s about apprehending the ultimate prize of completeness, maturity, Christlikeness, and the eternal crown God is preparing for those who really embrace His purpose.
All of us have regrets from the past, and all of us want to have no regrets in the future. The only way to live life without regrets is to live entirely for God’s purpose.
