Martin Luther King, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Roe v. Wade, and the Sanctity of Human Life

I primarily wanted to comment on the significance of these three days.

  • Sunday – Sanctity of human life Sunday, a rememberance of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.
  • Monday – Martin Luther King, Jr. day, a celebration of tremendous advances in civil rights at tremendous costs.
  • Tuesday – Our farewell to George W. Bush and our welcoming of Barack Obama.

My thoughts… (random, but worth hearing, or at least worth saying)

Sanctity of Human Life

Life is precious, a miraculous gift. From womb to tomb, conception to committal, it’s all God’s. He has the power and authority over life. He created all people, regardless of color, race, origin or ancestry, age, gender, or religous and polical views in His image. So every life has inherent dignity and sanctity. Christians ought to recognize and honor this dignity more than anybody else in the world.

Conservatives are often accused of being heartless and mean, and some voices in the camp warrant such an accusation. Agree with me on abortion or not, however, I wish you would all realize that I’m pro-life out of compassion for living things, not because it’s my political prefernce. That includes unborn life and elderly life and lives that have been wrecked by sin as well.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thank God for him, and others who have fought the same fight. Thank God for amplifying his voice. In only wish that we would continue learning King’s lessons and help fulfill his dream. We’re raising a family that celebrates deversity and equality. In fact, my six-year-old was upset that I was having my wisdom teeth out today and would have to be in bed a lot rather than being able to get up and celebrate this holiday. Not sure what I’d actually do, but I’m thankful today for King’s influence.

Farewell, Mr. President

I love George W. Bush. I don’t always agree with him. I think some things changed between his campaign and his Presidency. I think he enlarged government a bit too much, didn’t admit his mistakes often enough, and could have done some things differently. He realizes that, and so does every other President we’ve ever had. But I’m tired of the Bush-haters, most of whom are people who have little concept of the fight involved for security. The undeniable fact is that President Bush has obsessively tried to keep us safe since September 11, 2001, and he’s done a great job at that!

The other day, I engaged Karl Rove in a conversation, expressing my disappointment with the ignorant tone in many anti-Bush voices. He replied that the President (Bush) used to tell him “History will sort it all out, but we’ll both be dead by then.” President Bush – I love you and thank God for your time in office.

Welcome, My President Barack Obama

I’m nervous about the pluralistic and pro-choice policies of incoming President Obama. I think many Christian leaders made a terrible mistake in encouraging values voters to exchange their highest values for more selfish ones. I wonder about the ongoing freedom for religious conservatives to speak up for their values and feel that the persecution will heighten, the unborn will continue to suffer, and government will have more power over individual lives for years from now.

But he’s my President. God knows what He is doing and nothing happens beyond his control or sovereignty. We’ve elected an African-American President partly because of the efforts of men like Martin Luther King, Jr. and that one aspect of this Tuesday excites me, though I would have preferred that we voted Alan Keyes the new President instead. Nonetheless, I’m going to uphold my own end of the bargain and support and pray for President Obama daily – he’s my God-chosen President.

No matter what the future holds, today is exciting. My daughter is growing up in a historically significant moment. It doesn’t come without its fears, but it comes to be celebrated for what it is. It all makes me wonder what Wednesday holds!

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
