Series: Journey Through the Word – The Book of Deuteronomy

Based on Deuteronomy 1-4

ONE GREAT TRUTH: What do you do in the downtime between life’s major events? You reflect on God’s faithfulness, learn from the past, and set your feet for the future.

Brief…

I like baseball, but I didn’t quite make it to the major leagues (I stopped after pee wee!). I have been a student of the sport however, and I see baseball as an art. In the NFL, you just hit people. In the NBA, you just hit people (it’s gone downhill). But in baseball, there is both an art and a science involved. That’s where two important people come in on every team: the hitting coach and the pitching coach.

These two guys are hired for two very simple tasks… review the way the player has been playing and make adjustments for the next game and the upcoming season.

Thankfully the Holy Spirit is our “living coach” and the Scriptures are the textbook on how to compete well in life.

THREE STEPS TO IMPROVING YOUR GAME…

Review the Past: Mistakes and Successes

Moses begins with a review of the past and we could summarize his review this way… “You’ve blown it: don’t do it again. You’ve succeeded: keep it up.” That’s us. We’re to learn from our mistakes and our successes. This is known as “failing forward.” I heard someone say that success is really the ability to make improvements in between our failures.

Reflect on the Truth You’ve Learned

Moses makes some applications from their experiences and Deuteronomy 4 turns into one of the greatest chapters in all the Bible. There are 5 major truths Moses points out and they are all verses well worth highlighting:

  • God’s Word is enough. (v. 2)
  • God prepares us through crucibles. (v. 20)
  • God is a consuming fire: a jealous God. (v. 24)
  • God longs to be found. (v. 29)
  • God is God alone. (v. 39)

Reset Your Feet for the Future

Having been through what you’ve been through, and having learned the truth you’ve learned, now lean forward: on your mark, get ready, set, go!

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
