It’s been a while since I’ve done an article in the “great books series” but I thought I’d write one today after thumbing through a couple on my shelf on the subject of grace. Grace is a tough subject in terms of Christian theology because godly men and great scholars disagree on the intricacies of how we’re to live under it. Here are five books on the subject of grace, which actually offer some diversity of opinion…
The Grace Awakening by Charles Swindoll
The Grace Awakening calls all Christians to wake up and reject living in such legalistic, performance-oriented bondage. The God of the universe has given us an amazing, revolutionary gift of grace and freedom. This freedom and grace set us apart from every other religion on the face of the earth.
Grace for Godly Living: Allowing God’s Grace to Produce a Godly Life by Paul Chappell
‘Radical grace’ teaching has invaded the church! This new teaching on the grace of God gives the believer a ‘have it your way’ Christianity. It seems to say, ‘because of God’s grace, you can do what you want, how you want…you have the liberty in Christ.’
True grace from God’s Word is quite different! True grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and to live soberly and righteously. True grace will transform us into the image of Christ and compel us toward God and away from sin.
The funny thing is, Chappell’s book is essentially an argument with Swindoll’s (and other similar books) but I really like both perspectives.
