Our Secret Source of Power
This is adapted from a sermon based on Judges 16
In every legend, the story of every hero or villain, there is always a source of power that can be discovered and exploited. For Superman, it’s kryptonite. For Zurg (Toy Story), it was the double AA battery (or so Buzz thought).
I believe that for the believer, our secret source of power has to do with our inner walk with God. Deep in the recesses of the heart and soul, where we walk and talk with Him, where we have our conversations with Him, in the closet of prayer and intimacy, there is our secret source of power.
The story of Samson and Deliliah is an intriguing one, to say the least. It would seem, outside of Scripture, to be the stuff of legends. In reality, it’s the story of every Christian’s life with God, but in the flesh. In fact, I think we usually get one major detail wrong when we read it. We assume that the story is about the discovery of his source of strength, and the exploitation thereof.
I would argue that in Samson’s life, the source of his strength wasn’t what led to his downfall. It was his source of weakness instead, which was exploited fully and completely.
LIVING IN THE FLESH…
Living in the flesh puts us where compromise is possible.
Living in the flesh puts us where temptation is persistent.
Living in the flesh puts us where death is the end result.
THE SECRET OF OUR POWER…
It’s found in verse 20. He “didn’t realize the Lord wasn’t with him anymore.” The presence of God means power for living. Period.
“He that dwells in the secret place of the most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
~ Psalm 91:1
So the secret of power to avoid compromise, to withstand temptation, and to enjoy an abundant life is to abide With Christ – to have that secret place where He and I commune and talk and share life together. This happens with the accompaniment of prayer, Bible study, and a constant spirit of obedience. What’s your prayer life like? How is your spiritual life? This is the secret source of your power.
