The Priceless Privilege of Baptizing My Daughter

Rather than writing a lengthy post about this huge moment in my daughter’s life (and mine and Angie’s as well), I thought I’d just let you watch the video and hear my comments. I’m quite thankful that family and friends at a distance can enjoy this video. Two things to notice. On her way down the steps, she panics for just a second and says, “I don’t want to today…” But she never stops smiling. Then, we’re not sure what was up with her feeling of paralysis at the end, but it also gave us a good laugh.

ONE GREAT TRUTH: Attitude is half the battle… attitude is controllable, so we should cut off complaining and proclaim our faith in God’s awesome abilities!

Book Review: Breaking the Missional Code by Ed Stetzer and Dave Putman

I find that I often think about Christianity, church leadership, and church growth in terms that are a bit different than my own traditions and background. So does Ed Stetzer and so does Dave Putman. It’s rare that I’m able to really articulate well my own feelings about what it means to live a redemptive lifestyle in a fallen culture.

One great example of this is that I often feel just a bit guilty when people ask why we don’t have an organized visitation program or an evangelism training program along the lines of Evangelism Explosion or FAITH. I had to dog-ear Ed’s thoughts about this:

Book Review: What In the World Is Going On? by David Jeremiah

Yesterday, I closed the back cover of a truly noteworthy book by David Jeremiah entitled What In the World Is Going On? Honestly, I thought I’d never get through the book. It wasn’t because the book wasn’t good – it was exceptional. It was that I kept thinking Jesus must be coming back before I turn this next page!

It’s difficult to remain unaware that our planet is in social, political, and religious disarray. David Jeremiah shares “10 prophetic cues you cannot afford to ignore” without coming across as a mere alarmist, and certainly without making any specific predictions about the return of Christ. He is well researched and offers a detailed analysis of current world events, intermingled with thorough explanations of basic eschatalogical doctrines and terms such as the rapture, Armageddon, tribulation, and antichrist.

Israel plays a prominent role in Scripture, not only in the Old Testament, but in prophetic sections that refer to yet future events. Isreal’s becoming a nation in 1948, and remaining the most hated nation on the planet by surrounding people groups is directly tied to prophetic statements in Scripture about Jesus’ return. Jeremiah not only treats the subject of Israel thoroughly, but also the connection between modern Europe and ancient Rome, the role of America in end times events, the role of oil and the global economy.

The book’s tone changes to a more spiritual note toward the final chapters when David Jeremiah begins to make direct application of prophetic biblical events to the decisions and choices that each of us make each day. We all face a crisis of faith when we consider that Jesus will return to “judge the quick and the dead.” Jeremiah unapologetically points to faith in the risen and coming Lord Jesus Christ as the only hope for what lies beyond today.

I give five stars and two thumbs up. Buy it, read it, and let me know what you think.

Pentecost Plus Persecution Equals Church the Way It Ought to Be

I know this is a strange assertion, but I’ve been studying the book of Acts all morning and the thought hit me that Pentecost plus persecution produced the mightiest change agent in all of history – the local church empowered by the Holy Spirit. We are never commanded to purposely try to duplicate either, but we certainly ought to live in the warmth and glow of that early New Testament flame.

The BMA of America Needs Help

I’m very careful not to try to come across as a know-it-all. After all, I’m a 31-year-old Pastor with only about a dozen years of experience. So I’m really glad when someone like Ed Stetzer writes what just happens to be on my heart as well. Ed is a part of the Southern Baptist Convention, so his comments address the SBC. But I see the same issues at work in the BMA of America, my own denomination, and a host of other conservative groups.

I would encourage you to read his article about stemming SBC membership decline.

God Justifies by Grace through Faith, but Works Justifies Faith

I’m a Baptist with a long history of defending the doctrine of justification by grace through faith. Nothing has changed there. I simply want to point out something that James says. (I am studying through James in my personal quiet time because I need His truth-telling.) He basically says that works justify faith.
