Really Enjoy Christmas This Year

The economy has tanked and we’ve elected a Democratic President, but things could be worse (just a joke, folks). I love Christmas and it’s one week away from my posting this little blog. I wanted to pass along some tips for making Christmas interesting this year. You may already do these things, and I don’t do all of them, but they’re worth trying for the fun of it…

  1. Read the Christmas story on Christmas morning with your family – Luke 2:1-20.
  2. Bake a “birthday cake” for Jesus.
  3. Try boiled custard – it’s a Kentucky favorite!
  4. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t drink at all. Remember Christmas this year.
  5. Give a small gift to someone you don’t know.
  6. Let your kids see, in some visual and personal manner, what poverty looks like.
  7. Go to the Mall on a crowded day – it’s part of the season.
  8. Wear PJ’s all day… don’t shower or shave. Hey, it’s Christmas! (warning: your family may object)
  9. Overeat just a bit, enjoy the feast. It’s a celebration!
  10. Pray for men and women in military service.
  11. Put some cocoa puffs on the lawn – tell the kids its reindeer poop.
  12. Watch “the Santa Claus” on Christmas eve and put an empty Santa suit on the lawn – wake the kids up early.
  13. Don’t “shoot your eye out.” If you shoot yourself in the eye, work up some tears and blame it on an imaginary icecicle.

    Great post Brandon!

    A number of years we stopped all the running around on Christmas Day and decided to make it just a family thing. There are plenty of other holidays through the year to be enjoyed with the extended family. We have a great time, and a relaxing time, enjoying the day with immediate family. Then, every Christmas afternoon, we head off to a movie theater, as a family, to watch a movie. I know that might sound strange, but it’s great to enjoy a movie as an entire family.

    Good suggestions all. My new (say, last 5 years) Christmas song is “In the Bleak Midwinter.” Written in the 1800′s, it’s in our hymnal, but I’ve never heard it sung in church.     Wrap your kids in PJ’s and blankets with thermos of cocoa and drive around to look at Christmas lights.

    Go see Andy Williams in Branson. After going two years ago, to my surprise, my 13 year-old daughter insisted we go again this year.

    WOW! I haven’t had boiled custard since you and I used to drink it at Grandmother’s house years ago. I’m going to pick some up tonight! I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without it.

    I wish I could buy some boiled custard. Not only does no one sell it around here, nobody’s even heard of it. Arkansans are missing out!

    You should try making your own. It looks pretty simple.

    SOUTHERN BOILED CUSTARD

    INGREDIENTS
    1 quart whole milk
    5 eggs
    1 cup white sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    DIRECTIONS
    1. Into the lower pot of a double boiler, add water. In the upper pot, add milk. Heat through over medium heat.
    2. Beat eggs together until light. Add sugar and mix well. Pour a small portion of hot milk into the eggs and sugar to warm and thin this portion. Pour slowly into hot milk.
    3. Cook, stirring constantly until it will coat a spoon. Do not over cook. Add vanilla extract. Chill in refrigerator before serving.

    Boiled Custard II

    Ingredients

    * 10 eggs
    * 2 1/2 cups white sugar
    * 1 gallon milk
    * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Directions

    1. In a medium mixing bowl, mix together eggs and white sugar. Stir in milk.
    2. In the lower pot of a double boiler, add water and bring to a low boil. Into the top pot, pour milk and sugar mixture. Cook over medium heat until mixture coats a spoon, about 30 minutes.
    3. Add vanilla extract and strain using a sieve. Chill before serving.
