The Prosperity Gospel Stinks!

http://isitpossibletomakemoneyonline.blogspot.com/

I don’t write too many blog posts that are negative in tone, but I’m not afraid to sound out a warning against something dangerous or offensive to the glory of God. The prosperity gospel is just that – it’s dangerous and it’s offensive to the Author of redemption. Al Mohler describes it more eloquently that I, but we feel the same.

When Steve Brown spots something deceptive he says “It stinks! It smells like smoke! It’s from the pit of hell!” That’s how strongly I feel about this notion that God wants you to be rich and wealthy in this life and the pathway to that is to make some televangelist rich and wealthy with your hard-earned money.

I’ll be brief, but here’s why it upsets me so…

  • Too many missionaries have sacrificed their wealth for the gospel.
  • Jesus lived without a place to lay His head.
  • The riches of this world aren’t worthy to be compared with the next.
  • Martyrs. ‘Nuff said!
  • Gross mis-applications of Holy Scripture.
  • Gross mis-understanding of Jesus’ teachings.
  • Focus on this life over the next.
  • Poor people being sucked dry and driven to debt by wealthy “preachers.”
  • Latter-day revelations and utter nonsense substituted for biblical revelation.
  • Invitations to get healed or get rich, but not to get saved.
  • Americanized, individualized, materialistic infiltration into biblical theology.
  • Bad tupees, big gold rings, and personal jets… for Jesus’ sake, right?

That’s my rant. They are rare, but Al fired me up. Oh, and John Piper fires me up about it too…

Back to the Bible. Back to the suffering, bleeding, but living and risen Christ who offers redemption from the cost of sin!

I feel the same way as you. This does not mean that there cannot be rich Christians. But Christianity should not make you rich, materially in this world. It makes you rich with the Spirit and the Gospel of Christ.

We have a man here from Rehma, who has a personal jet that he flies in every Sunday to preach at his church. That makes me sick when there are so many poor people who have no food.

What did Jesus say, You never fed the hungry …
Mat 25:37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
Mat 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Robert – agreed, and I wonder how many unbelievers are remaining unbelievers for the very same argument.

Love a good rant. I have long been bothered by the prosperity gospel message. To me it’s not unlike how many Christian churches have been taken over by a particular political agenda. Shouldn’t church be about God and the gospel?

As one aside, I do believe in “latter-day revelation” as a principle. I do not believe God has abandoned us nor closed the heavens. I believe he guides and directs us even today, with the issues that are unique to our time. I take great comfort in that.

Great article. And, btw, very nice site design.

Thanks Alison, I picked up the design at the local quick-mart!

I agree that God speaks today – He isn’t silent. I simply believe that we have to take what we hear in our imperfect ears from our perfect God and evaluate it against His perfect Word.

I couldn’t agree with you more! Very well said.
